“Change of Character = Trend Reversal”

What Is a Change of Character (CHoCH)?

A Change of Character (CHoCH) signals a shift in market structure, suggesting that the current trend may be weakening or beginning to reverse.

A bullish CHoCH indicates a potential shift from bearish structure to bullish.
A bearish CHoCH indicates a potential shift from bullish structure to bearish.

CHoCH is commonly used as an entry or exit signal because it reflects a change in directional momentum.

How to Identify a Change of Character

A Change of Character forms when a Break of Structure fails to hold, signaling that the prior order flow is no longer in control.

Important:
A valid CHoCH must originate from the same swing high or swing low that produced the prior Break of Structure. That level defines the active market structure. Breaks of unrelated or internal highs and lows do not represent a true Change of Character.

Bullish Change of Character

A bullish CHoCH forms when:

  1. A Low (L) is created

  2. Price forms a Lower High (LH)

  3. Price creates a Lower Low (LL)

  4. Price then breaks above the prior Lower High, forming a Higher High

This sequence signals a shift from bearish to bullish structure, provided the break occurs at the swing level that defined the prior BOS.

Bearish Change of Character

A bearish CHoCH forms when:

  1. A High (H) is created

  2. Price forms a Higher Low (HL)

  3. Price creates a Higher High (HH)

  4. Price then breaks below the prior Higher Low, forming a Lower Low

This indicates a transition from bullish to bearish structure when the break occurs at the BOS-defining level.

Trading With CHoCH

Because CHoCH reflects a shift in market direction, it is often used to:

  • Exit trades aligned with the old trend

  • Enter trades aligned with the new directional bias

For example:

  • Traders may exit long positions when a bearish CHoCH forms

  • Traders may exit short positions or look for longs when a bullish CHoCH forms

Common CHoCH Strategy

After a CHoCH forms, traders establish directional bias and wait for pullbacks into key areas such as:

  • Order blocks

  • Supply or demand zones

  • Resistance or support areas

When price retraces into these zones after a CHoCH, traders look for entries in the direction of the new structure.

The Theory Behind CHoCH

A BOS confirms that the current order flow remains strong. When price breaks back through the swing level that produced that BOS, it signals that buyers or sellers are no longer defending that level.

This loss of control marks a Change of Character, indicating that market behavior has shifted and that a potential trend reversal or loss of momentum is underway.

Best Timeframes for CHoCH

CHoCH is most commonly used on intraday timeframes, including:

  • 30-minute charts for broader structure shifts

  • 15-minute and 5-minute charts for shorter-term or scalping approaches
